RFID Tracking for Pallets

Popularly, RFID has been used to track the actual inventory that a factory produces or a warehouse stocks or a supply chain delivers.

However, a useful yet relatively uncommon use of RFID is for the packaging industry itself.

Pallets, Crates and other types of re-usable packaging called Returnable-Transport-Units (or RTU in short) are a wonderful area for a company to start using RFID.

Very often, it makes more sense to try out RFID with the RTU as opposed to actual inventory because:

RTU’s are limited in number per company, so it can be a small project
As the name suggests, re-used, so the tag cost is one-time
Limited reading points, so investment in RFID readers is very low
This can be a closed loop project, hence reducing time to get ROI and keep data in-house.
Quick to deploy without affecting production or delivery schedules for a pilot project

RFID benefits closed-loop Retail: Bloomingdales

Just read a very interesting case study of real-world RFID benefits for a retailer.

Bloomingdale’s recently completed a pilot where they compared a store with RFID on items to a store still using barcode on items.

The results are wonderful to look at:

The item-level scanning of more than 10,000 items “took two hours, far less than the 53 hours required with barcode scanning. On average, 209 items could be counted per hour via barcode whereas 4,767 items could be counted per hour via RFID.”

Mojix a startup ,led by former NASA deep space scientist has confirmed the development of passive RFID Technology with the read range of more than 600 foot.The company uses digital signal processing technique to deliver the required specification.According to the company resources its STAR system can identify the GEN 2 Tags within 250,000 square foot area.

Deutsche Bahn implements Touch and Travel

According to the sources ,travelers in Germany would soon be able to buy tickets with the help of the Cell phone and RFID technology. Deutsche Bahn (DB) the german based rail service provider with the help of the telecom giant Vodafone announced the launch of “Touch and Travel” the system which works on RFID signs and cellphone to eliminate the usage of Paper Ticket throughout the Germany.

Over the next two years both the firms in collaboration with a RFID software and hardware company aims to install touch point terminals-signs containing Passive 13.56 MHz RFID inlays complying with N.F.C(Near Field Communication).With the help of Cell phones with RFID-NFC enabled chip the commuters would be able to Travel hustle free without buying paper tickets.

The Kits are now being processed in less than a minute in comparison with Barcode which took 10-30 minutes for the same quantity and work.
